I have seen a fallen ship once, heard the bone chill screams and swam in the blood red water. I have fought the rakam and lived. I have loved a woman and lost her to the waves. I have seen the black kiasheen.
Now, I am on a ship I do not recognize with people I do not call friend. They ask me who I am. I tell them little…
For I am here for them.
I must find their secrets. I must speak to the woman with the blue eyes. When I am finished, perhaps I will tell them who I am, for they have heard my story, and they think they know the end.
They are wrong. This is only the start. And tonight, I begin.

I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning of this short read, but by page 6, I was all in!
The world building is spot on! I feel as though I’ve always known about the whale-like kiasheens who can also fly, the deadly rakam and the greater and lesser families of the Shattered Islands. The language is beautiful – Ra’Kia’ Ruu Island, the lovers Dak’Ra and La’Kia – and rolls off the tongue with a sensual ease.
We know early on that “Sev” is not who or what he seems to be. I was prepared for a simple man of wealth or even a king, but what I got was so much more! He is a man on a mission and trying to travel without divulging who he is…until a situation presents itself, and then he is simply amazing. I was temporarily lost at the planning of his retribution – then I figured it out…you will too!
Sev’s mission seems to be twofold and could bring him his heart’s desire, but also up against a great evil. I’m looking forward to seeing if he succeeds…or fails.
Wow. It took me a minute to understand fully. This is the first book of the genre i have read and I was caught not wanting to put it down. It drew me in because of the uniqueness of the story. I haven't quite read anything like it and want to read more on this series. I truly enjoy it. I love these to authors and have read all of their books and they always surprise me. This team Karpov Kinrade are truly talented writing from paranormal to erotic to epic and urban fantasy. Amazing team! This is a short quick read and can't wait for more.
Dak'Ra is at sea & hiding who he is, searching for the love of his life La'Kia and the ship & man that took her the black Kiasheen. In the process of trying to find the ship, the ship he is on is attacked my the Rakaam. Loosing a lot of men a ship comes to their aide. But it isn't what it seems. He has to reveal who he is, A Stonebearer. "Tell all you see that Dak'Ra still lives. Tell them he comes for the Black Kiasheen" that was my favorite line of the book.
I want to say a lot more but i don't want to give away the book. I recommend for everyone. Its very unique and i believe you will enjoy the start to this series. It will leave you wanting more. I know I do. Karpov Kinrade pulls off another amazing story.
Let me start by saying that The Shattered Islands is not a book that would normally be on my reading list.Karpov Kinrade is,however, on my list of "go to" authors...so I decided to take a chance when offered an ARC.
I'm so pleased that I made that choice.
I was gripped from the start by both the narrative and the setting. Such imagination has gone into the creation of this world and although alien to me, I believe in it.
The same can be said of the characters. With a few well chosen words they come to life and their back story is made clear.
The pace of the story is brisk with action scenes that are crucial to the plot (there is some violence and some gore but neither is gratuitous).
The ending sets up Part Two beautifully.
Bravo to Karpov Kinrade for writing something unique and totally unlike their previous novels...
Wow! In the first novella-length installment of their new epic fantasy series, Karpov Kinrade has done it again. Done what? What they do every single time they put words down: create an incredible story filled with characters that I am instantly loving in a book I can't put down until I finish. And then, I am sad that I have finished, especially when I can't immediately move on to the next book in a series. Kinrade has imagined a world unlike any I've read before. This novella had it all: mystery, fantasy and the sea. I devoured this story and instantly wanted more. I cannot wait for the next part in this series!
I received an advanced ebook copy for review purposes. My opinion was not influenced in any way.
I loved it! It has a feel of/like Science Fiction or the Fantasies of yesteryear; like a cross of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Andre Norton, and L.E. Modesitt, Jr. The writing style also reminded me of other of my favorite authors from my younger years. This is a good start to a series I believe I will enjoy, and am looking forward to the next one! I really cannot tell much of the plot without giving away too much. Large, occasionally flying whales as transport. Spearing. Very nasty predators. Three major Families/Clans. And a pursuit. (I received this story as an ARC for an honest review)
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
A mysterious man is a passenger to a crew ship. "The crew is like me. We are both full of secrets, and we are both lying." The Shattered Islands has a tale of a warrior who fell in love with a beautiful girl. But now legend says that they are "...two halves of one soul." Filled with mystery and tales of the sea, The Shattered Islands: Part 1- The Rakam is a quick and enjoyable read.
I was given an ARC copy of this novella for an honest review. I want to tell the whole story, but I won't do that. I was pumped to read something new from this dynamic duo. This story definitely fit my taste in reading material. I read it in one sitting. It was much too hard to put down. This book kept my imagination thoroughly entertained and enthralled! I would recommend this book to all of my friends and all book lovers alike. Way to go Karpov Kinrade...
this was my first time reading an Epic Fantasy and let me tell you i am greatly impressed. its a short story but it really takes you to a crazy place in your imagination. Loved every minute of it. i cant wait for the next part to see where the story is going to take us next. Thank you for sharing this with me
In full disclosure, I won this in a Goodreads giveaway but that had no influence on my review. I’m terrible at paying attention to the word counts on these giveaway and missed this was an eighty-six page novella but that’s fine. It was a very good study in world building.
And that’s what shines in this novella, even more so than the characters, the world building. The setting is the best drawn “character” in the novella. Sev, the point of view character, has come onboard a ship and is not quite what the crew thinks he is. They know he might be from a wealthy clan, doesn’t quite fit in with the rough and tumble crew. They’re not sure what he’s seeking passage for and neither does the reader until the end which I’ll leave unspoiled.
Sev does have a goal in mind. He’s obviously more than he appears and through him world building tidbits are peppered into the story, such as these stones of power that leave their mark on their users (if I’m reading it right, their eyes, hair etc. get more and more blue the more they use the magic).
But as I said above, it’s the setting that shines. They travel on ‘ships’ that are giant shells bound down to the backs of kiasheen, whale-like sea creatures capable of flight if need be. Kelp tie downs, hammocks, clothing etc. further the description of the sea-based civilization of the titular Shattered Islands. It’s a world where the women seem to hold the power and the men have to make their way in this world. It’s a world where clans matter both a source of comfort and yet a cage in many instances where two clans don’t get along.
There are even myths that will play a big role such as one of two lovers from rival clans and their legendary fate. It’s a myth that feels familiar and comfortable because almost every culture has one. In this wet world, the dark sea holds a fierce apex predator, the rakam, fully capable of pack hunting a kiasheen to death and all the people aboard one as well.
While obviously short, the story accomplishes what it sets out to do, we learn Sev’s objective and it sets us up for the next tale in the series. The characters could have been a bit more fleshed out but still, Sev is interesting and I’d like to see what happens next.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
The Shattered Islands is about a lonely man in search of the love of his life who was taken from him a long time ago. He sails the seas on whatever ship he can catch a ride on. The ship that he happens to be on in The Shattered Islands is attacked and a lot of the crew are lost in the battle but finally after the few that are left have almost gone their last mile another ship comes to their rescue and saves them from their attackers.
The Shattered Islands may be a short story or a short novella but it is filled with a lot of characters and it also gives you enough background info on the characters and their situations to know what is going on. You get all the info you need to know who each character is and what their purpose is. It has a lot of blood and gore for such a small story. It is like a big story in a little book.
The Shattered Islands gives you all the info you need to keep you hanging on right up until the very end. While it will keep you hanging on and wanting more it does not leave you hanging in the middle wondering what just happened when you reach the end of the story. But believe me you will want more. Why? Because Karpov-Kinrade is just good like that. I think that they throw a little bit of magic in to their stories to keep you coming back for more. Well you know something like the subliminal messages on tv commercials. No seriously though if you have not read The Shattered Islands yet then trust me you need to grab your copy today and get busy reading.
You need to check out their other books as well. All of their books are out of this world amazing. Let me warn you if you read just one of their books then let me tell you, you are going to be hooked and you will have found yourself a couple of more fantastic authors to add to your top list of authors.
The world in which the story is set is fascinating, and feels true to itself. I look forward to exploring it further in future books. :)
I found many of the characters interesting and likeable, especially the captain of the first ship. I hope he'll come back in future books.
The hero is loyal, and sometimes kind. (Though I would have preferred always kind.)
The storyline is good.
There's plenty of subtext. (I.e., the writers do not assume you are an idiot. They give you credit for being able to work things out for yourself.)
The writers know how set up a mystery, how much info to give out at a time, and when to give you the final payoff. I think this is one of the most vital skills of good storytelling, and they have a great instinct for it. :)
They also know how to build up a good, satisfying dramatic effect. :)
Stuff I did not like so much:
The hero is sometimes ruthless. In the words of Terry Pratchett, you can't do what the bad guys do and still say, "We're the good guys." But perhaps he'll have a character arc in future books that will get him past all that stuff.
It's written in first person present tense, which pretty much forces the writers into a "telling" style, rather than a "showing" style. (However, I did enjoy it more than any other present tense story I've ever tried to read.)
A lot of the names are very similar, which gets a bit confusing.
The story feels a little rushed in places. I hope future stories in this series will be longer. :)
Conclusion:
Overall, this was an absorbing and satisfying read. :) I'll be on the look out for future titles in this series.
Sev is a man full of secrets. Secrets that he cannot divulge to anyone. He lives a solitary life, intent on righting all the wrongs committed against him. Though he yearns for his lost love, he knows he cannot drift away from the task at hand. Somehow, some way, he will make sure that justice is served.
A delightful start to a new series by the writing duo, Karpov-Kinrade, The Shattered Islands thrusts the reader into a dark and tumultuous world. We meet Sev, the Kiasheen, the Drakruu, as well as a new cast of characters within the story itself. We also get to see the destruction caused by the deadly Rakam.
The Rakram remind me of the Great White sharks, though they're much more bloodthirsty. These creatures will do anything to make sure that nothing stays alive whenever they're around. It's a heck of a way to die, most especially when you're doing everything possible to survive in such a hectic world.
Karpov-Kinrade have created wonderful new races as well as an intriguing lore that truly draws the reader in. It makes us want to explore this world. To delve into the secrets Sev is holding deep within himself. His reluctance to mesh with the other passengers on the ship he's on is understandable. They don't know him, nor do they know him.
Sev refuses to be a prisoner of the world that surrounds him. We get to see him battle through his pain and uncertainty as he tries to make the best of decisions. Granted, they're not always the right decisions, but at least he gives his all to whatever he puts his mind to. I can't want to see what this wonderful writing duo brings to next to the table. Will Sev find the black Kiasheen, I wonder? Only time will tell.
The Rakam is the suspenseful first book about a mysterious seafarer in a world very different from our own. In this world, ships are set atop whales called kiasheen that can fly short distances, rakam are vicious sea monsters with sword-like noses, and a newfound friend may very well be an enemy.
The story was quick-paced and the amount of content was appropriate for the length.
I would recommend The Rakam to fans of fantasy novels and fans of epics such as Homer's Odyssey. Due to some scenes with graphic violence, I'd suggest this book for older teens.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story. It's different from my usual genre, but I find myself wanting to know more about the mysterious seafarer and what the rest of his journey looks like. I didn't expect the story to be so gripping right away, but I couldn't put it down once I picked it up. Deep down, it feels like this is going to be a long series built around love and the nightmarish journey one soul will make to be reunited with its other half. As a sucker for love stories, this book felt like it was up my alley in a sort of roundabout way. Consider me impressed yet again by this author duo and the beauty they weave into words. Can't wait for The Shattered Islands: Part Two: Shells & Stones!
This is a Short Novella and is set in an awe inspiring and incredibly creative, descriptive fantasy world written by one of my favourite set of authors Karpov Kinrade. The Shattered Islands: Part 1-The Rakam is unlike anything I have read before, I would say it is quite a dark YA novel that is very unusual in its overall outcome but is strangely addictive although short. I would definitely say that I personally think Karpov Kinrade have a firm basis there for the opening to another successful series that could afford to go into much more depth than it does in this short novella.
Within the first few pages you are immersed straight into a fantasy realm bursting with so much information that you are able to get a really good feel to the main story quickly. You are at sea on a ship which is not quite a ship, with a man looking, searching for the love of his life. Dak'Ra is a Stonebearer which gives him a unique appearance, this alerts others to who they think he may be but they have no idea at all of whom they have riding on their ship. The man they gave safe passage to for a fixed price is not who he seems, he is much, much more- he is the legendary Dak'Ra, a man who is known to all and he is out for revenge........
An excellent little novella, it was a true pleasure to read and has earned a solid 4****!!
***I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review***
This is a story about Dak'Ra who is at sea, searching for his love and the man and ship that took his love away. While searching for La'Kia, the ship he is on is attacked by the Rakam and another traveling ship comes to their help to heal their Kaisheen ship as well as the other sailors. What no one on either ship knows, Dak'Ra is a Stonebearer, and by the end of the book, he has revealed himself to those on both ships and leaves them with a message to pass along that he is coming for the Black Kaisheen and the man who had taken his love.
While this was a good book and I was hooked by the end, it was very difficult for me to get into this book at first. Even though this is a novella, it took me several days to actually get into reading it. For me the first few pages of a book for me helps me visualize the characters, the scenery, which KK does in all the other books I've read of their, but this one was a bit lacking for me. This is a great story and I will definitely read it again, but the first 1/3 of the book was a little struggle for me.
I love epic fantays and have read so many fantaysbooks lately and when I saw this one I thought I would give it a chance. and OMG I do not reegret it at all. This is the first part and I did preorder the second part and I want it NOW...
This is a very well written fantays book in a very nice world. I got drawn in straight away and I didnt want to stop reading. The story is very well written in so many ways and when you cant stop reading its the best feeling ever and it shows how good the book is. the language is good and the characters is very good. You get to know them but they still have so many secrets and I know they will be revealed latr on.
This is one of the best new fatasy books I have read in a very long time. I cant wait for more books and I just know this is a story that is gonna be loved by so many fantays lovers around the world. I really hope it one day will come out as paperback or even hard cover bacasue I am so gonna by it. Cant wait now for part 2 in the series1
I’ve always loved Karpov Kinrade’s Paranormal Fantasy books, so when offered a chance to read an ARC of The Shattered Islands i jumped at the chance.
Seeing the cover, i was reminded of this book by Brandon Sanderson - The Way of Kings and when i read the first few lines, i knew this book will be one great epic fantasy. I love how the story was written, the narration of the hero, the description of the surroundings are so vivid and with me & my crazy imaginations, i feel like i’m actually with them. The fight was well written as well and i’m so intrigued on the girl he was looking for and as to what happened to them both.
Karpov Kinrade takes us yet again to another world where we would want to be a part of. I can't wait for the next book to see where they will take us.
This one has me very intrigued. While we do jump in with both feet into a world without a lot of backstory, you pick most of it up as you go along. There are several creatures involved that I couldn't really picture at first, but once we meet one, well - you'll know what they are.
We are introduced to a strange and mysterious passenger that is more than what he seems. So much more. And he is our viewpoint into this strange and very interesting lore as well. There's a bit of adventure in high seas sort of fashion.
I'll be very interested to see where this goes.
*This book was received in exchange for an honest review*
As always, with dynamic writing duo Karpov Kinrade, we are introduced to a world that is different from what we're used to. Sometimes the differences are small, but other times they are immense. This is one of those stories. We are drawn into a foreign world, with sometimes difficult names to remember, but those names belong to memorable characters. As with all of their characters, we learn to care about their fate and their well-being. It's one of the things that I can always count on from Karpov Kinrade. I won't rehash the plot, since all of the other reviewers tend to do that. I will just give my most sincere recommendation to anyone who has not yet read one of their books, or who is interested in journeying to a new and magical world.
The authors have done it again!!!!! They have written another piece of art that should be put in a museum. The plot for the story is off to a great start and I am immensely going to take the pleasure of reading the rest of the series when they come out. The main character is a character that I can relate to. He is unique and and really well written. The only criticism I would have is that I can't get enough of this author and their books, they need to write faster or release blurbs to tide me over. This is a form of cruel punishment, I have nothing more to read from them right now!!!! I need Karpov Kinrade books, I'm an addict!!!! :)
While this may not be everybody's cup of tea because, let's face it, not everyone likes every story they've ever read, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is a short read that continues on in the next part. It is well worth your time to give it a try! You get enough of the background of the characters and story to follow along smoothly and makes you want to read on.
This is not Karpov Kinrade's usual type of story. For that, I applaud you for thinking outside the box and trying something new to you. You did an amazing job, and I cannot wait to read Part Two!
I received an ARC for an honest review, which I have given. All thoughts are my own.
I sigh with relief. "then it begins." I take three deep breaths and exit the room. I lift the necklace around my neck and place the whistle to my lips. I blow. And a roar rips through the skies. I have always loved reading fantasy books and this one was no different. Karpov Kinrade do not normally write fantasy I think they did a fantastic job with this one. They kept me wanting more from the beginning and I could not put the book down till I had finished it. They have a great way of telling a story that always leaves you wanting more. I can not wait for the next book in this series. As always Karpov Kinrade I loved reading a new story from you guys.
I received an ARC of this book for my honest review. This was the first tine I have read this kind of genre, epic fantasy. It was a little confusing at first. There are names and things described that I wasn't sure how to pronounce but once I kept reading and figuring it out it got easier. Maybe some kind of guide at the beginning on how to pronounce names would be helpful. The story is really creative and the main character is a bit of a mystery which keeps you wanting to find out more especially at the end. It made me want to find out what happens next.
Disclosure: I won a copy of this novella in a Goodreads giveaway.
The strength of this novella (novellette?) is in the world building, which is well done. I found the world fascinating and wanted to learn more about it. There is some lovely imagery in the story too. I didn't connect with the protagonist as much as I like to in a story--he seemed like a character from mythology, too strong and smart. I think he needed a little flaw--but this is the beginning of a series so maybe his character will become more developed as the series progresses.
This was a thrilling introduction to an exciting new series, promising an adventure-filled ride through this new and exotic world.
Karpov Kinrade held me captive with mysterious characters, beautiful imagery, and an ending that has me wanting more. Chockfull of action, this quick read had me on the edge of my seat and I cannot wait to continue the journey with Dak'Ra as he traverses the Shattered Islands in search of the black kiasheen and his long lost love.
I received a ARC in exchange for a honest review!! This book was pretty awesome!!! A few parts of the book did confuse me just because it is a new world but was always sorted out after I read further. Yes this is a very short book but it is still such a great story for being so short. I loved this book and it is a must read. The author takes us to a new world where anything is possible. Please read!!!
So this is an out of the box writing for this author, this team chose to take a chance and it paid off in full!!! This is not a genre that I would read, but how can you say uno to an author team that you love. This book was short and clear, telling us what Dak'Ra is searching for and how is had to hide his identity, is so interesting..I can't say more because I would give it away. You have to read it.
Took me a moment to get into the genre. I think I have read some of everything from Karpov Kinrade but this is new! I loved it! I took a chance with this book but I thought why not, I've loved everything else from this writing duo. I was glad I did. I really enjoyed the story. I love when books take me beyond anything I've ever read and into a totally different world! I can't wait for Part 2 of The Shattered Islands.
Was so excited to see this is the beginning of a series!! The book was captivating! Creative and some great imagination of characters. Kindness shows through toughness at the same time, without missing a beat. Looking forward to the next installment. Everything I have read by this awesome writing team and independently of one another is just amazing! Your creativeness, imagination and the way you juggle your careers with your personal lives are just amazing! Keep it up.
The book could have been great but a few things. It was way too short so not a lot of things could be explained. It left my imagination trying to make the world in my mind but I found it hard to do. There just wasn't enough description to do it. I instead focused on the plot of the story which was still hard to do. I will read the next book when it is out to see what happens with the main character.
